Ghanche district, as the rest of Baltistan, is home to ancient sites which reflect the Buddhist and Tibtean Bon past of the region.

A day spent at Ghanche would surely bring you up close to the ancient history of Baltistan.

Dotted along this rocky mountainous landscape are ancient inscriptions and carvings on huge boulders that contain traces of Buddhist and Bon influence that existed in the region before the advent of Islam to the region.

One such site is at Thoqsikhar. Very close to the track that leads up to the mosque, you can take a right turn and follow the directions which will lead you to a site where huge boulders sit as storytellers of the past.

On one such boulder you will find this ancient inscription:

Thoqsikhar Rock Carving Inscription, Gorgeous Ghanche

The inscriptions translates into the Buddhist matra: “Ohm mani padme hum” which means ‘praise to the jewel in the lotus flower’. It is fascinating to see how in the past, these same routes were treaded by ancestors of the present day denizens of Khaplu and Ghanche. Those inhabitants left markers of their presence in the form of their own sacred mantras, which for us today still stand as sign posts of the past!

Do you wish to see the most azure crystal clear water ever imaginable?

If yes, then Barah is the place for you! Right below the main road on the way to Khaplu, keep an eye out for shimmering blue ponds fed by natural springs.

If you get close, you can even see the source of the water on the bottom of the ponds. These shimmering blue pools power an entire ecosystem, the most important beneficiary of which is the agriculture of the people of Barah.

A walk beside these blue pools will be enough to refresh you; and the lush greenery adds a soothing charm to the mix!

Chaqchan Mosque can truly be considered as a symbol of peace and plurality of the region. One of the oldest mosques of Gilgit-Baltistan, this place of worship has a diverse past. It is said that in ancient times it was worship place of the Tibetan Bon religion after which it was converted to a Buddhist temple when Buddhism dominated the region. In around the late 14th century, with the arrival of Muslim Sufi preachers to the region, the site was transformed into a Khanqah a worship place of the Sufis. It is from here that the Nurbakshia Sufi order grew to become the most popularly followed religious denomination in District Ghanche. However, the most remarkable fact about the mosque is that it is widely believed that the remnants of the previous religious worship places still exist within its foundations hinting at the idea, that they were never destroyed by the Muslim reformers. The mosque is still preserved significantly in its original form, making it a unique specimen of traditional Balti architecture and woodwork. It is one of the must see places during your visit to Ghanche.
